The Harvest Golf Club is experiencing some of the best playing conditions since our opening in 1994. The 7109 yard, Graham Cooke designed layout is in pristine condition for this time of year.

“We are very pleased with our current level of condition” says Head Professional Chad Scott. “Everything is very lush and full. Greens are speedy and rolling true and the fairways are producing perfect lies for approach shots.”

The Okanagan experienced a very mild winter that resulted in an early opening for 2010. A higher than normal rainfall total for May has also produced ample playing conditions. But Scott warns not to stray too far off the fairway.

“The downside of the lush conditions is a longer, thicker rough. So accuracy off the tee is at a premium. You’ll still find your ball, but your next shot will be a little tougher if you’re not on the short grass.”

With the weather warming up, The Harvest are seeing busier and busier days. The new 2010 rate structure allows for 365 day advanced bookings to guarantee your group a preferred time if you plan far enough ahead. Additional rates at varying price points during the day has given the golfer some options and most green fees now include power cart and range balls.

The Harvest Golf Club is situated on 254 acres in “downtown” East Kelowna. Fifty four acres are devoted to a working orchard featuring 5 varieties of apples including: Spartan, Macintosh, Royal Gala, Granny Smith and Fuji. An additional 5 acres of land produce Ehrenfelser, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wine grapes, used exclusively by Calona Wines to produce numerous award winning wine products.

The Harvest Golf Club provides an excellent location for events of any size or just to relax with friends. Every detail of the Clubhouse has been carefully considered for the enjoyment of our guests.

You can book your time online at anytime from your computer or mobile device or call us directly at 1-800-257-8577 and the staff at The Harvest will be happy to accommodate your needs. Special group rates are also available.

“I’m not good enough to get custom-fit” is the refrain of so many golfers who buy their irons off the rack. Convinced their swing inconsistencies override the potential benefits of clubs built just for them, these modest souls don’t allow that sometimes the chicken came before the egg. Fitters say the reason a lot of people hit it sideways is because they haven’t been custom-fit. Trying to figure out the swing with clubs whose length, weight, lie angle, shaft flex or grip size don’t match the body encourages players to make unnatural compensations that prevent them from developing proper mechanics. If a shaft is too stiff for a player, he’ll hang back on his right side to get the ball airborne, and if the length and lie angle are off, then their posture is doomed from the start. The higher the handicap, the more necessary it is for that player to get fit.

But only during a complete fitting are factors such as face angle, launch angle, spin rate, ball speed, attack angle and club path scrutinized to discover the head-shaft combination that optimizes distance and consistency. Plus, an experienced fitter will likely recognize swing flaws stemming from ill-fitted equipment and consider intangibles like a player’s level of fitness and tempo.

Another of the most overlooked problems of buying off the rack is set makeup. Certified fitters at The Harvest strive to get the person into the mix of irons, hybrids and fairway woods that gives them the exact right distance gaps. Sometimes getting custom-fit can be cheaper because we won’t sell people long irons they don’t need.

Many fitters believe it’s worth measuring launch conditions once a year, like going to the doctor for a checkup. You likely won’t need new irons, but if your swing has evolved significantly, the specifications might need to be tweaked.

Q: Is it better to be fitted outside or inside?

You’ve got to get fit in real conditions. That means being outside, hitting off real grass, viewing the entire ball flight down-range. Even if there’s some wind, that’s a regular part of the game, so it’s beneficial to see how different setups result in certain trajectories for a player against that element. And though indoor spaces are set up with enough room to swing, a lot of people can’t help but feel claustrophobic with four walls and a ceiling. If this affects their comfort level, it will affect their swing, and the fitting session won’t be as productive.

If you are interested in being custom fit, a no obligation fitting can be booked with one of our certified club fitters at any time. In addition, local representatives from Taylormade, Ping and Callaway visit The Harvest almost weekly, bringing with them the latest in ball tracking technology to produce the most accurate fitting specifications. Here are upcoming fitting days at The Harvest:

When our local Taylormade Rep stopped by last week to do some club fittings I had just read about their latest putter online the day before and didn’t expect that he’d have one to show off. But there it was, one of the first to arrive in Canada, mixed in among the rest of the putter line-up, Taylormade’s Rossa Corza Ghost. I wasn’t looking to change putters, but who could give up the chance to be one of the first to test drive the new flat stick.

At first look, the all white mallet produces flashbacks of my old Zebra putter from the mid nineties. Designed by Dave Stockton, the contrast of the white head against the green putting surface, coupled with the circular hole and 3 black lines, help aid alignment; a la a reversed Odyssey 2-ball. I was happy to see that Taylormade has reverted back to a more traditional, softer on the eyes, looking mallet. A far cry from their recent “fighter jet” designs.

This isn’t a gimmick. Lining up a putt is amazingly easy to accomplish and the head sits very square and level. I found it pleasing to the eye.

For a mallet putter, it has a lighter than expected weight, something that I personally prefer, as I find heavy milled putters to have too much mass. The Rossa Corza Ghost is balanced very well and produces a smooth and effortless stroke. But does it roll the ball into the hole? And more importantly would I like it?

The first putt I hit was like butter. The Ghost seemed to gently caress the ball towards the hole. The solid, yet muted feel of this putter with Taylormade’s AGSI+ face insert put one of the best rolls on a golf ball I’ve seen yet. 5 more putts and I was sold! But how much? I was expecting a tag of $299 to $350, for such a fine work of art. Nope. To find out that the Corza Ghost retails for $199 CDN just made a great putter even better.

Will the Ghost replace my trusty Odyssey #5 that I just can’t keep out of the bag no matter how hard I try? Maybe, only time will tell. But many people, especially those with alignment issues, are going to find this putter a god send. It may be the best putter to have a Taylormade stamp.

Available June 1st for $199 CDN, the Golf Shop at The Harvest is now taking orders.

The Callaway Interior Tour made their second stop of the 2010 season on Monday May 3rd at the Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna. Usually known for its great spring weather Kelowna was hit with unseasonably cold temperatures caused by blustery winds off of Okanagan Lake that reeked havoc with the 44 professionals that participated.

Tyler McGhie, an assistant professional from the Okanagan Golf Club seemed unfazed by the conditions clinching his first tour win carding a score of 71, 1 under par. McGhie, recently moved to British Columbiafrom his native Ontario for the 2010 season and had already made a splash by placing second at the two man event in Osoyoos on April 12th. Harvest Head Professional Chad Scott shot a respectable 75 in the tough conditions to tie for 7th with others including Harvest Assistant Matt Greenway.

Special thanks go to host professionals Gilles Dufort and Chad Scott for opening up their course for the day’s event.
If your mind is cluttered with swing thoughts and you’re struggling to hit the ball straight, try this drill to help you square the clubface at impact.

Put two short-iron shafts on the ground on either side of a ball parallel to your target line and about six to eight inches apart. You can tee the ball to make the drill less daunting, but make sure the shafts extend toward the target to create a channel for your club to travel through.

Now swing the club so it moves from inside the target line at the start of the alley, goes down the channel, and then moves back inside the target line at the exit.

This drill not only improves your clubpath, but in squaring the clubface it educates your hands, forearms and body to move toward the target as you swing down and through
